  1. What is Mediachest?
Mediachest is a new concept based on social networking and what people own. It is based on the idea that someone in your circle of friends or someone you interact with on a regular basis owns or knows someone who owns items you are interested in borrowing. Mediachest allows you to keep track of your books, CDs, DVDs, and games. Using Mediachest is very easy. Adding items takes no time at all and work is being done everyday to make things easier. You can also include pictures of your collection if you feel like showing off what you own.

  2. Why is this useful?
Mediachest is useful in many ways. By adding your media to the system you can allow your friends to see your entire collection by viewing your homepage. Once your friends create their own Mediachest accounts, you can add them to your friends list. By doing this, you can search through their collections and ask to borrow anything from them. When your friends add their own friends, you also get access to them. Eventually you end up with a huge group of people that you can interact with.

  3. How do I create an account?
To create an account you go to the new user page and sign up for Mediachest. The only required information is your First Name, Last Name, an e-mail address, and a little bit of information about who you are.

  4. I have created an account, now what should I do?
Once you have created your account you should login to Mediachest. You should then add your books, CDs, DVDs, and games to your collection. After that, you should invite your friends to sign up, or give them a link to your collection so they can see what you own and interact with your collection.

  5. How do I add something by UPC?
To add something by UPC, look on the back of the item for the UPC code. Enter the code into the box with no dashes or spaces. Make sure you only use numbers. For more help, click here.

  6. I can't find my item in the database, what should I do?
If an item is not in the master database, you can suggest for it to be added to the database. There is a form you can fill out with information about the item that appears when there are no search results for the criteria you used to search for it. The item will then be validated and added to the database.

  7. I have finished putting in my collection, now what should I do?
The next step is to add your friends. You can add them to your friends list if you know their Mediachest username. Once you have added them to your friends list, you can browse their collections to look for items you want to borrow. You can also add the items you want to your want list. You can also join groups that you are interested in. You can also rate and review items. There are many things to do already, and lots more planned for the near future.

  8. How do I show off my collection to people who don't have Mediachest accounts?
By creating your account, you also created your Mediachest Homepage.
The URL for your homepage is http://www.mediachest.com/users/[your username]/profile.html
Your DVD collection page is http://www.mediachest.com/users/[your username]/dvds.html

    Your CD collection page is
Your book collection page is http://www.mediachest.com/users/[your username]/books.html

  9. How does borrowing work?
Mediachest facilitates borrowing and lending by allowing users to request items from other people. You can search through collections for an item you want to borrow and then request to borrow that item from the owner. The owner will receive the request along with your previous borrowing history to determine whether or not they should let you borrow the item. If the owner decides to let you borrow the item, the next step is to meet with the owner and get the item. If it is someone you see on a regular basis, you should have no problem completing the exchange. If you do not know the person you are borrowing from, we recommend meeting in a public place or a coffee shop. If you don't feel comfortable borrowing or lending with a certain person, you are by no means obligated to complete the transaction. All of the steps of the borrowing process are recorded in the database so you can keep track of who has what and how long they have had it.

  10. Why should I put items in my want list?
By putting items in your want list, you allow your friends to see what you want. You can also allow sellers to see your want list, and they can make offers to sell you items in your want list. By putting in a price, sellers can get an idea of how much you are willing to pay for the items in your want list.
